In another study, 15 healthy adults were tested for disruptions in sleep patterns and the researchers noted that melatonin pills significantly minimized sleep latency (the time it takes to fall to sleep), while improving overall sleep effectiveness and actually extending the total sleep period.

Taking a trip to different time zones often causes the tiredness and sleeplessness known as jet lag. Taking melatonin pills can assist at minimize or even avoiding jet lag, especially when taking a trip throughout a number of time zones. Melatonin works by re-synchronize the body's circadian rhythms, helping the traveler adjust to the local time better and faster.

Melatonin Caution Notes


Taking a melatonin supplement may have adverse or even more of a sedating effect if take along with certain sleeping pills that contain benzodiazepines, antihistamines, antidepressants or any other sedating type drugs. Also melatonin pills can react different when taken with valerian, 5-hydroxytryptophan, or alcohol as these may increase sedation.
